A pretty straightforward novel, enriched by the unique character of Newfoundland and the hardy, idiosycratic people who live in that harsh land. Particularly intriguing is the manner in which people from "away" tend to get swept up in the lifestyle of Newfoundland and the subtle ways that living there changes people's outlook on life. A possibly unfair comparison: For a more engaging book about Newfoundland, try "Sweetland" by Crummey
