While I found some of the history in this book interesting, and much the science is going to be new to a lot of eyes, I wondered a bit about the structure. The author consciously structured the novel as a mock legal case, which does make the read quite engaging and gives the science and history a more approachable frame. But, at times, this structure almost made me suspicious that the science couldn't stand up for itself, or that we weren't being given enough of it to come to our own conclusions. That said, it's still a worthwhile read for anyone hoping to reduce their sugar consumption or at least be more mindful of it. At the very least, it's a good review of the new directions sugar research is taking, and the serious questions we should be asking ourselves about our sweetest addiction.
