As much an epic odyssey across the U.S. as it is a teenage runaway story. Arnold's novel follows the capricious, sarcastic, and headstrong Mim as she flees from her father and stepmother in rural Mississippi to find her mother, who may or may not be dying of a horrible disease. Alone, angry, and unsure of her own sanity, Mim's journey takes her from Greyhound buses, rundown motels, and towns that are no more than a speck on the map. Confronting the dangers of the road as well as her personal demons, Mim meets a strange cast of surreal characters that either help her along her path, or stand in her way. Great for those who enjoy strong female protagonists, dark humor, and stories set in the deep south.
