I'm generally not a big fan of Sean Bean because he holds some very backwards views about women, but hearing him recite The Lady of Shallot here is worth the price of admission. I've been familiar with Jimmy McGovern since he wrote for Brookside back in the '80s. If you like gritty drama this might be for you. Like a lot of people have said, the stories are kind of depressing. What is uplifting is that McGovern deals with real people, mostly working-class Northerners, so it can be refreshing to see more of the world explored, instead of just posh southerners from the capital. Another plus is the use of the cream of British acting talent such as Juliet Stevenson. Stevenson is the Judi Dench of her generation. Another woman, like Dench, not taken up by Hollywood because she is not a Barbie doll, but if you don't experience her, you're missing out. Come check her out.
