Gibbon's work is a detailed and lush description of the waning of the Roman Empire. Not only is it a definitive history, but it is a literary masterpiece. The language is elegant and elevated, the vocabulary is rich, and the humor is sharp. Don't ignore the footnotes. Gibbon was the master of the footnote, and you may find yourself chuckling.
