Legacy of the Dead

An Inspector Ian Rutledge Mystery
Jan 20, 2018Roundcat rated this title 4.5 out of 5 stars
Starting with an exciting problem, which develops into two mysteries, one of which involves Hamish McLeod, the voice in Ian's head, that is commentator and heckler. It takes Ian a good deal of driving about and police work to assemble the facts needed to solve the puzzles. As he stirs up the people involved, someone tries to kill him; so we know he must be getting close to the answer. Very little help is offered by the suspects and interested bystanders. In order to prove his case, he sets a trap for the killer and character assassin, so as to free Hamish's fiancée from suspicion. We are left with an end somewhat like one of Shakespeare's tragedies--bodies everywhere. There are more books in this series, so Ian must have lived through it all.
