Farley Mowat (1921-2014) – ‘Lost in the Barrens,’ what a delightful book! This is one of his earlier works (1956). I am ashamed to say it was likely my first or perhaps second book by this highly acclaimed, popular and prolific Canadian author; a champion of the far North. This and another book earned him the Governor General’s Award for Juvenile Fiction in 1956. He was honored with many awards and nine Honorary Doctorates from Canadian Universities. This book can be enjoyed by anyone at any age. Jamie MacNair, the nephew of a trapper, and his native friend Awasin join a Chipeweyan expedition to the remote Barren Grounds in search of deer. They get separated from their group with no hope for rescue and need to hunker down to survive the onslaught of the Canadian winter. This will by no means be my last Mowat book. Highly recommended reading by Senior Doctor-at-Bass! D. A.
