This is a thrilling and ingenious book. The protagonist is unique, the setting imaginative, and the plot just creepy enough. I read this as a child, before I ever read Harry Potter, and later I couldn't help but notice all of the similarities, down to the most minute details like starry ceilings and talking portraits. J. K. Rowling obviously plagiarized this but failed to achieve the same quality of writing.
