I thought I should finally read this book since it was the inspiration for my favorite movie. However, the two are VERY different. The book is presented as individual case studies whereas the movie is more about the various individuals under Dr. Sacks' care within the same institution. The book feels very clinical and detached. The movie makes you really FEEL and connect with various patients and their families.
This is a really intense story of an epidemic I never knew existed in US history. Be prepared to read about unspeakable and immense suffering, with only moderate release. Dr. Sacks should be sainted for the work he has done with these patients. That said, I will definitely check out the documentary and movie that were based on this book.
