Maggie's 12 in the early 1960s, part of a large Italian family, with an Irish mother. Her grandfather's a control freak, but Maggie's one of his favorites, and she returns his love, while knowing her mother disapproves. Confusion about her family, and indeed Life and her parents in general trouble Maggie. Peer pressure is an issue, but she loves learning and school. This novel's a delight. Quildlen knows how to write about families, especially, it seems, Catholic families. It was a bit long, and the ending seems, on the other hand, a bit abrupt, or it would have gotten another star.
