One of the definitive surveys of the American Civil War. A comprehensive and accessible book from one of the most prominent Civil War historians.

A great ambitious read if you have a serious interest in the Civil War or a great reference for anyone taking a Civil War course or working on a related history project.

I asked historian Ivan Musicant for the Civil War book he would recommend to a Martian needing a quick introduction. This is what he recommended and he is not wrong. Clear and vivid writing, right amount of detail, well researched and very readable.

Outstanding! Extremely informative and very well-written. Dr. McPherson is a great stylist, and his narrative is dramatic and riveting. He very ably describes the events leading to the Civil War as well as the War itself. There are so many books about the Civil War era, but it is hard to imagine a better one volume work.
