The author is a professor at Yale so his scholarship is to be trusted. The book is confusingly organized and is about a rather obscure subject--mnemonic devices of the 16th century. But the book is well worth reading quickly for the wealth of information about what life in the 16th century in Italy and the Far East--the practice of religion, the activities of merchants and businessmen, the nature of government---fascinating.
