From the acclaimed writer of BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES comes an original graphic novel starring two of DC Comics' brightest stars: Black Canary and Zatanna! A year ago, Black Canary infiltrated a gang of female criminals set to pull a dangerous heist at a Las Vegas casino. Its leader was skilled in hand-to-hand combat and with more than a passing interest in the occult, specifically black magic, one nasty customer. Rather than be taken by Canary or the law, she went to her death, vowing she would get revenge on Canary and her own former gang members. Now, a year to the day later, death stalks those gang members, and Canary must turn to her friend Zatanna to help investigate.

I really enjoyed the story. Black Canary gets involved in some blood magic accidentally while saving some people in Vegas. Then she calls on her friend Zatanna to help her out. I've been wanting to read something with Zatanna in it for a while. I'm always a fan of magic users in stories. I need to read more Zatanna soon. She's a fun character to read.
The little background we get on how the two heroines met was great. I really liked seeing that. Loved all the friendship between Zatanna and Canary. The villain they had to deal with was so crazy. No spoilers but Who does that?
This was also another lesson in don't say spells when you don't know what they will do. Never do that.Don't mess with magic you do not understand. Definitely, check this out if you are thinking about it. I enjoyed it a lot.
A delightful story end-to-end, with strong underlying themes of friendship and loyalty. I really enjoyed the style of Quinones artwork, as well- the female protagonists were all beautiful and healthfully proportioned, not absurd supermodels. Definitely the kind of comic I hope my daughter grows up to read someday.
This original graphic novel, set refreshingly before that pointless New 52 reboot, explores the friendship of two of the DC universe's strongly written women. Black Canary, the field operator with the deadly voice, teams up with Zatanna, the magician in a story spanning time. Dini has a great handle on both characters, particularly Zatanna, who he's written before from time to time, and he gives them both a good deal of depth, a sense of humour, and fine nuances. The artistic style is a bit cartoonish, but certainly within acceptable standards, and the artist gives the story a fun tone.
This good, old-school, super-hero team-up features fellow Justice League members Black Canary, a martial artist with a sonic scream, and Zatanna, a stage magician who wields real magic. Both are known in part for their fishnet stockings. Paul Dini reveals how the two women met as teens, who Black Canary helped Zatanna join the Justice League, and see the two team-up to solve a sorcerous crime.
With all that has gone on with DC Comics' New 52, it's refreshing and a surprising relief to read an original graphic novel that takes place pre-52... in my efforts to give the comics company a chance with their line-wide reboot of a few years ago, I sometimes don't realize who much less I enjoy their comics nowadays. Dini captures the personalities of the two women in their heyday, and the two work surprisingly well together despite their very different power sets and crime-fighting realms. This one is a fun read for long-time comic fans.
