This collection is gorgeous. Serious, but gorgeous. She immerses us in a community (communities?) through various stories that are just as poetic and descriptive as I'd expect from a poet, but are also really true and realistic sounding. Love how she is decolonizing with this book -the explicit stories are full of real love, lust, and respect and are really life affirming mixed in with the sadder stories. Can't wait for more from this amazing voice!

The stories are a beautiful insight into what it can mean to be indigenous in Canada in the 21st century. From the streets of inner cities to the backwoods we are encouraged to bear witness to the fears, loves, hatreds, longings, and truths of the protagonists. The last words ring true. Many of the stories deal with quite explicit content, sex, violence and death, but each short story left me with new thoughts and feelings to consider. Akiwenzie-Damm has a very quirky style, with some of the dialogue lacking typical punctuation; it provided a fast paced atmosphere and each of the stories went by extremely fast. Overall a very interesting and provoking read.
