In Season 5, Volume 1 of Hell on Wheels, Cullen Bohannon [Anson Mount] finds himself a stranger in a strange land - the mountain town of Truckee, California, home to the Central Pacific Railroad. This rough railroad town teems with thousands of Chinese workers, foreign in language, culture and traditions. Despite the challenges of corralling this new workforce, Cullen leads the Herculean effort to tunnel through the Sierra Nevada Mountains, sometimes achieving only inches a day in the race to complete the first Transcontinental Railroad.

At this point most of the original cast characters that I cared about are either dead or gone. I'm really only watching to see Bohanon find his family and the Railroad finish. I do like Fong, the Chinese laborer introduced. Overall this is a good show.

3 stars for S1 for the scenery, an original story though with unsympathetic characters. 2.5 stars for S2 when the pace of the saga slowed and with little suspense. Skipped S3 & S4 for the negative reasons found in S1 & S2. Decided to give S5, promised to the final season, another go because of the Truckee and San Francisco setting. Unfortunately, same old slow pace and more of the same unpleasant protagonists. The bonus material "How the Chinese built America" was worth a watch. And recommend to check out "Iron Road," a 2009 Canada/China television miniseries, see "Summary."

Cullen Bohannon again deals with the Swede (now aligned with the Mormons) and a new nemesis who has influence on the new Chinese workers who are building the railroad across America. Of course, Thomas Durant (Colm Meaney) head of the Union Pacific's effort to win the intra-continental race, remains a staunch adversary as well. Interesting historical documentation of how Chinese workers helped in the Central Pacific's efforts.
