Love the fact that the Vera character doesn't feel the job requires a power suit or other "feminine" or "masculine" accoutrements; and that the story line doesn't center around her relationships (or lack thereof) with men . . . not even an ex lurking around the corner anywhere. No kids, no burdens, not even a puppy or kitty . . . just Vera. It takes great courage to BE that person and great insight to write for her.

Love Vera's line to her sidekick: "I didn't always look like this you know."

So pleased to have just binge-watched the entire season on my tablet with Hoopla (10 free movies or TV episodes per month with my library card!) when Netflix doesn't have any Vera and Amazon Prime's free offerings don't include it either (right now). I was skeptical about the new DI, Aiden Healy - I was attached to Joe...but he's grown on me - Brenda Blethyn is able to inhabit the character so completely and consistently that it seems effortless. Still glad to have Vera's verbal punching-bag, Kenny, and other characters to round out the team. On to Season 6!

Vera is an engaging character. The series is adequately written but not greatly written.

Agree with another commentor, Brenda calling everyone "love" is annoying and feels inappropriate. But otherwise truly enjoy her character. Miss the previous "Joe". Great series!! Will watch again down-the-road.

I love Vera. My husband and I both watch these. Great acting, great scenery. Brits know how to create a good mystery with subtly. It's not too dark or gratuitous. Vera is a curmudgeon with some gravitas. Very enjoyable entertainment.
