reviews of Christian Petzhold's 2007 German film Yella say that it is a remake of this Harvey movie so I watched it to find the echoes. both films are good but Yella held more appeal for me.

Terrible. I thought from the reviews here, and what I had read on imdb.com, that this was going to be a solid old movie, possibly with an atmosphere similar to the old Twilight Zone series. It wasn't. The script is downright goofy, and everything is very low budget, including the cast. I forced myself to watch until the end just to make sure I wasn't dismissing it too hastily. This was released in 1962. They had been making good movies for decades at that point, so I was really disappointed to see this was such poor quality. Giving 4 to 5 star ratings for a film of such poor quality is ridiculous. What would these reviewers rate films like Rebecca (1940), I Walked With A Zombie (1943), or The Uninvited (1944)?

No surprise this has become a cult favourite. It's not gory or scary but creates a creepy atmosphere that most horror films can't deliver.

Independent films usually don't have any kind of "polished" feel to them, especially an ultra-low-budget one like this, but that's its strength--it has a more isolated, personal, eerie feel to it, without expensive special effects (even the sort that existed back then) & just the creepiest, lone organ music, Candace Hilligoss's unearthly performance & her character's blinking in -&-out-again of this world makes for an effectively unsettling horror film that's entirely deserving of a special release, a la Criterion; & it's supposed to be dream-like.

While on her way to take a job as a church organist in Salt Lake City, Mary Henry (Candace Hilligoss) is haunted by a bizarre apparition. It compels her to an abandoned lakeside pavilion, beginning an eerie and macabre chain of events. Herk Harvey's macabre masterpiece, while made on a modest budget, has gained a cult following on late-night television.
