Noni Jean (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) is a talented singer whose ethereal voice has taken the world of music by storm. A glimpse beneath the surface, however, reveals a girl who's cracking under the pressure to top the charts. When Noni tries to end it all, concerned cop Kaz Nicol (Nate Parker) pulls her back from the ledge, and shows her that life is still worth living. Along the way, Noni and Kaz fall head over heels in love. Meanwhile, the powers that be conspire to keep them apart as well as focused on their respective careers. But without Kaz's love, Noni may never find her true voice.

I loved it, though at times it was very predictable. Still good story. I love Nate!

I watched this movie twice and the second time was even better. Gugu Mbatha-Raw is a talented actress. I loved the chemistry between her and Nate Parker. I think Minnie Driver did a good job as well. Good drama

WHAT AN AWFUL BEGINNING TO A MOVIE AFTER THE GIRL PLACED SECOND IN TALENT CONTEST.13 MINUTES WAS ENOUGH.

Talented actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw shines in this slow moving, dark movie about a young singer's self-discovery through the fire of celebrity and the over-management of her mother, played intensely by the feisty Minnie Driver. But this serious film is a little hard to watch. We've seen the topic of poor-little-celebrity-girl done better with a much lighter touch in the perfectly balanced comedy-romance-drama "Notting Hill" (1999).

This could've been called "Love and Music," referencing writer/director Gina Prince-Bythewood's first feature, "Love and Basketball." Her latest starts out as a cautionary tale about fame in the music biz and then turns into a melodramatic love story between a troubled R&B singer and an earnest cop who saves her life. At times it plays like a movie-length episode of "Empire." It's an imperfect film-overlong, a little messy, uneven-but it boasts a very strong central performance by the awesomely named Gugu Mbatha Raw as the singer. Nate Parker is good as the cop, but can't quite keep pace with her. There are occasional echoes of "The Bodyguard," but this is much better. Minnie Driver plays the overbearing momager and Danny Glover plays Parker's father. There were rumors that the character is loosely based on Rihanna. With Ava Duvernay's "Selma," 2014 was a good year for African-American female directors. Also see Gugu in the period piece "Belle."
