Hector is an esteemed psychiatrist whose relationship with his career-driven girlfriend Clara (Rosamund Pike) is one of complete predictability. When Hector's increasing irritability begins to threaten his relationships with his patients, he decides to take a sabbatical, and get out of his comfort zone. In doing so, surmises Hector, he can gain greater insight into his own needs as well as the needs of his patients. Discomforted by his decision yet supportive of his yearning for greater life experience, Clara wishes Hector well as she sends him on the first leg of his globe-trotting adventure. And what an adventure it is; from his initial stop in Shanghai, where a wealthy financier (Stellan Skarsgard) showers him with the spoils of affluence, to his visit with Tibetan monks, his turbulent trip through Africa, and attempt to find closure to a past romance in L.A., Hector gradually discovers the answer to his existential questions, and so much more.

Enjoyable movie. Both principal actors do a great job. Excellent cinematography in China, Africa, and Russia.

Interesting movie about how life can change if you move forward. Has some comedy thrown in that works.

Man feels "empty", decides to travel, stuff happens. This formula was done much better in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. The directing, writing, characters, cinematography, and even jokes were all superior in that much more inspiring movie, so watch THAT instead. THIS movie was very formulaic, even poorly done in parts.

Some great characters, good lines, and clever plot twists. Enjoyed the peek into other countries and cultures.

Pleasantly surprised. Expect to have a few tender moments and several outbursts of laughing. Great acting. Well done.

The film was ok, albeit the scenes in China did not ring true. It is difficult to believe that the "hero" was so unaware of the true nature of his situation.

I really enjoyed this movie. It was sweet, moving the characters through their own personal journeys filled with many humourous moments, moments of utter terror, moments of illumination, and then to a really nice finale. Loved it.

I'm a big fan of the Secret Life of Walter Mitty and this movie is similar in theme. I laughed out loud throughout this movie. Well worth it!

My rating limitation is for the use of the "f" word in this movie. Totally unnecessary in such an amazing, wonderful, uplifting film. Excellent acting by Simon Pegg. I would buy this if I could get with the "f" word muted somehow. I will watch again, and again, while muting the bad language if I can. Loved it! I am going to read the book to see if it is better than the movie.

A cute English take on a famous French book. Simon Pegg can actually act and Rosamund Pike is the quintessential English woman; beautiful, intelligent, but understated and unpretencious . Loved the travel scenery.

Well worth the watch.
