The eighth Simon Serrailler case

'Not all great novelists can write crime fiction but when one like Susan Hill does the result is stunning' Ruth Rendell

The cathedral town of Lafferton seems idyllic, but in many ways it is just like any other place. As part of the same rapidly changing world, it shares the same hopes and fears, and the same kinds of crime, as any number of towns up and down the land.

When one day DC Simon Serrailler is called in by Laffertonâe(tm)s new Chief Constable, Kieron Bright, he is met by four plainclothes officers. He is asked to take the lead role in a complex, potentially dangerous undercover operation and must leave town immediately, without telling anyone âe" not even his girlfriend Rachel, who has only just moved in with him.

Meanwhile, Simonâe(tm)s sister Cat is facing difficult choices at work that will test her dedication to the NHS. But an urgent call about her and Simonâe(tm)s father, Richard, soon presents her with a far greater challenge much closer to home.

To complete his special op, Simon must inhabit the mind of the worst kind of criminal. As the op unfolds, Lafferton is dragged into the sort of case every town dreads. And Simon faces the fight of his life.

Couldn't bring myself to finish it and I finish everything. Bad!

I love this series, but "Soul of Discretion", while eminently readable, isn't up to Hill's previous novels about Simon Serrailler. Subject matter not your typical mystery, and bringing family members into the thick of it just isn't "on".

No.Not this one.The old saying never judge a book by its cover applies. The cover is beautiful.. The contents, sordid to say the least. Susan Hill writes so very well and never dodges contentious issues but this one I think goes a step too far. I have read the series and I did request this latest Simon Serrailler novel. There are rave reviews. I, on the other hand feel like the little boy in the story of The Emperor's new clothes.I am not waiting for the next installment if there is one.Unlike the others in the series, this one has a bad feeling of hopelessness about it.I think she should call it a day.... Having said that, while not changing my opinion at all about the subject matter, in the light of what
has happened here recently with a similar character in real life, she got the psychopath's personality absolutely right.
