Comically cursed at birth with the name Tristram, this gentleman relates every event in his life, from conception onward. Though everything occurs between parlor and garden, Tristram's excitable father, bewildered mother, and Uncle Toby provide ample opportunity for the digressions and madcap events that structure this seminal novel.

Add a CommentTristram Shandy is a tale of rakish what passes for adventure. I've seen numerous interpretations on film, and found all pretty self indulgent past sense. Same here.
Samuel Pepys diaries suffer the same over innuendo.
Anton Lesser is a fine actor, notable in many roles, completely defining a few. His Thomas More in Wolf Hall, not in the shade to Paul Scofield's Oscar winning portrayal in Man of All Seasons.
Yet here his delivery is somewhat "one note" and a bit falsetto, and in the fashion of many "talking books" lately, rather over hasty. Annoying and not engaging.
