The serial tale of impoverished little Nell and her gambling Grandfather, who, quite frankly confuses me. He is reported to be a loving care-taker who abandons everything to flee the Curiosity Shop with her in an attempt to secure freedom from the evil Quilp, and a better life together… but quite honestly is abusive. He leaves her alone, steals her money, starves her and forces her to beg in unsafe conditions which ultimately cause her death. The plot was weak, as is the case in many serials, but Dickens has had much better characters - (see Great Expectations and Pickwick Papers)
