This is a tongue-in-cheek documentary by James Toback & Alec Baldwin that is much more than it seems. The straight pitch is that Toback, a devotee of Bernardo Bertolucci's LAST TANGO IN PARIS, is attempting to film a remake called LAST TANGO IN TIKRIT (Saddam Hussein's hometown) starring Alec Baldwin and Neve Campbell. To that end, he travels, along with Baldwin, with camera crew in tow, to the 2012 Cannes Film Festival and attempts to secure financial backing. What makes this documentary spectacular is all that it accomplishes with interviews. The viewer receives a concise education about acting, film making, how movies are financed, the French and Italian New Wave, Brando's influence on LAST TANGO, the key to understanding Martin Scorsese's movies, Polanski's debt to socialism, etc. The interview with Ryan Gosling alone is worth checking out this DVD.
