In this unique construction book for kids who love tools and trucks, readers join a girl and her family as they pack up their old house in town and set out to build a new one in the country. Mom and Dad are going to make the new house themselves, from the ground up. From empty lot to finished home, every stage of their year-and-a-half-long building project is here. And at every step their lucky kids are watching and getting their hands dirty, in page after page brimming with machines, vehicles, and all kinds of house-making activities!

As he imagines it through the eyes of his older sister, Building Our House is Jonathan Bean's retelling of his own family's true experience, and includes an afterword with photographs from the author's collection.

This has quickly turned in my kids' most favorite book. It is so much fun to watch the house being built, page by page, and see how the kids assist. WE LOVE THIS BOOK!

This has the charm and attention to detail that the Little House books have. It's fascinating to read about how people build things from scratch (especially if you are not handy yourself). My nephews LOVE this book!

Love, love, love this picture book! There's so much going on in the pictures that's not mentioned in the text (hint, look for the cat). It's a labour of love in every way.

My grandchildren were really able to identify with this having just watched their own home being built away from the city on a rocky farm.
This was wonderful for me and them, even the 2 1/2 year old was entranced.

While his award-winning picture book At Night was set in the city, author-illustrator Jonathan Bean's latest offering is pure country. A young girl's family lives in a trailer while they slowly build their new home from scratch. Bean, who based the story on events from his own childhood, offers readers a highly detailed account of the house-building process (from laying the foundation to hosting a frame-raising party) as well as a moving portrait of a family whose mutual work creates tight-knit bonds.

This is an absolutely delightful children's book to read and look at!
I smiled all the way through it and will go back through the book to catch all the details of Jonathan's drawings! Perhaps it's because I have been to his home--while in progress and when completed--so could very much relate to all he described. Perhaps it's because he is my cousin's son that I found it so engaging; but I really think everyone--young and old--can relate to it and find it both educational and entertaining. I give it 5 stars!!
