Not a police procedural, but a very satisfying story set in late 19th century Sicily, complete with priests, nobles, townspeople, and peasants, i.e. a cast of gossiping, salacious folk whose entertainment is interfering in the lives of their neighbors.
Slyly humorous and subtle from page one, I did a second take when I read the police officer assisting the lady off the boat, not holding her hand, but his hands on her backside. The plot wanders, and every time I thought I knew where it was going, I was delightfully surprised, right up to the end.
