From Tom Rob Smith--author of the phenomenal Child 44 trilogy--comes one of the most anticipated novels of 2014....

Until the moment he receives a frantic call from his father, Daniel believed his parents were headed into a peaceful, well-deserved retirement. They had sold their home and business in London and bid farewell to England, setting off to begin life anew on a remote, bucolic farm in rural Sweden.

But with that phone call, everything changes. Your mother's not well, his father tells him. She's been imagining things-terrible, terrible things. She has had a psychotic breakdown and been committed to a mental hospital.

Daniel prepares to rush to Sweden on the first available flight. Before he can board the plane, his father contacts him with even more frightening news: his mother has discharged herself from hospital and he doesn't know where she is.

Then his mother calls:
"I'm sure your father has spoken to you. Everything that man has told you is a lie. I'm not mad. I don't need a doctor. I need the police. I'm about to board a flight to London. Meet me at Heathrow."

Caught between his parents, and unsure of who to believe or trust, Daniel becomes his mother's unwilling judge and jury as she tells him an urgent tale of secrets, of lies, of a horrible crime and a conspiracy that implicates his own father.

The presentation from his other books has changed. Not a bad thing and it certainly works in this novel. What is fiction, what is fact? Who is telling the truth? Who and what to believe? An interesting premise is presented in this book. I wasn't sure if I liked it or not. I wasn't sure if the story was true or not. And I was a little scared to know. So I kept reading . It is definitely a story that draws you in and makes you want to keep reading.

An interesting Swedish “fairy tale” for adults about “trolls”: the real and the fictional.

Great read. Who do you believe, your mother (who seems to be going mad) or your father (who is accused by your mother of being involved in something shady). You experience this difficult situation along with the narrator. I had to keep reading to find out who was telling the truth!

Either Daniel's mother has gone mad, or his father is involved with a serious criminal conspiracy. All he has to go on is his mother's story and the evidence she brought with her on her escape from custody. Who would you believe?

The Farm is a truly original, emotionally charged thriller that kept me thoroughly engrossed the whole way through. A two-sitting read - I could barely put it down!

"it was a lie, an improvisation, a vicious one - a glimpse of his cruelty, and his creativity, since viciousness can be creative too."
