Easter Island has mystified the world ever since the first Europeans arrived in 1722. How and why did the ancient islanders build and move nearly 900 giant statues, and how did they transform a presumed paradise into a treeless wasteland, bringing ruin upon their island and themselves? Nova explores controversial recent claims that challenge decades of previous thinking about the islanders.

I visited this Island a number of years ago and being close up to these porous rock statues is totally amazing!

Interesting documentary that delivers a very good hypothesis that the moai on easter island were walked into place across the island by way of rocking the statues back-and-forth in an upright position while using ropes and teams of people to try and keep the statues from toppling over. It's important to remember though that carving and moving these statues was not the same animal as carving and moving 100 to 1,200 ton granite blocks found in many other monolithic sites. The moai on easter island were carved from easily carved volcanic rock, which is very light weight in comparison to granite (the heaviest statue on the island is less than 85 tons), and the statues on easter island were moved over roads that only vary in grade by some 3 to 5% (the walking method doesn't work on grades steeper than that). So while this is a very likely hypothesis for easter island, trying to expand this method to explain sites which contain precision carved granite, moved up steep grades and even up onto mountains is like comparing apples to bowling balls.

Fascinating examination by archaeologists at the enigma that is Easter Island. The original inhabitants left their famous statues, which to this day still perplex scholars and cause debate. The causes for the island's gradual downfall are explored, but the focus is on the statues, including trying to determine the way they were moved through carrying out a practical test on a theory the project leaders have. Insightful, and a good look at a beautiful location.
