The earth has been invaded by a species that take over the minds of their human hosts while leaving their bodies intact, and most of humanity has succumbed. But Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away. Wanderer, the invading "soul" who has been given Melanie's body, knew about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the too vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn't expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind. Melanie fills Wanderer's thoughts with visions of the man Melanie loves--Jared, a human who still lives in hiding. Unable to separate herself from her body's desires, Wanderer yearns for a man she's never met. As outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off to search for the man they both love.--From publisher description.

I am really sad that this book isn't better. I really liked the Twilight series, but this one has fallen far from my expectations. I am about 2-3 CDs into the audiobook and I don't think I can listen any longer. It's a lot of talking about the same thing so far and not really getting anywhere.

I listened to this one in my car. What an amazing imagination. Although it seems like the typical boy likes girl, other boy likes girl and girl likes both boys it really wasn't quite that simple. Needless to say it was well worth the overdue penalty that I paid today when I dropped this back off at the library.

I am not a big sci-fi fan, but this book is exceptional. Good story, good characters, deep philosophical thoughts, exciting and good love story. I rate it a 9 of 10.

The Host is an amazing story of the perils of humanity and what one alien soul will do for the name of love.

An outstounding read!

Really excellent narrator. I have a feeling I might not have stuck with this book to the end if I hadn't had her help understanding what was going on and why I should be concerned.

There is a pretty decent mild dystopia at the heart of this story, filigreed with the familiar platonic romantic tension and sometimes frustratingly selfless femininity that readers of Twilight will recognize. I tend to like dystopias, so I just let my mind wander through the scenes of romantic yearning and that worked just fine.

I have a feeling that the part of the book that is a dystopia may be not be very appealing to most fans of platonic romance, and the romantic parts may not be terribly appealing to most fans of dystopias, so the book may have a hard time connecting with the right audience.

I suggest that if you have any doubt how this book would sit with you and want to give it a try, take the audio version so you'll have the narrator to help you, too.

I enjoyed this so much, I listened to it twice in a row. The narrator is very good. Some people might find the first 3 chapters a little slow but stick with it, it gets sooo much better. I tried finding reasons to need to go for a drive so I could continue listening to this audiobook.

Highly recommended for action, emotional punch, and plain ole good storytelling. I recommended listening to this audiobook.

Very good narrator, easy to listen to. Good for teenagers, similar to Twilight in major themes, but with concepts a bit more complicated, with aliens and an invasion of our world by a "superior" race of beings.

It's been years since parasitic aliens calling themselves "Souls" have invaded Earth and taken over. Once a "Soul" is placed in a human host, the alien takes over and suppresses the human's mind. But when Wanderer awakes in her new body, she finds that her human host isn't so easily overcome. Melanie, her younger brother, and the man that she loves have been in hiding; and she'll do anything to get back to them, even resist the alien parasite that has taken over her body.

The parasitic "Souls" are easy to dislike at first. But Meyer has given the alien race such a rich and colorful backstory that is truly fascinating. And Wanderer is a unique "Soul" who soon finds herself caring for the same people as her host, and finding herself torn between ties to her own people and the humans.

Wanderer, eventually renamed Wanda, starts to become an integral part of the human community, and through her relationships, she begins to understand that her species should not have taken over Earth, whatever their gentle reasons. But how can Melanie and Wanda continue to live in one body, and what will happen once the Seeker who is desperately looking for her finds her? Will Wanda ever be accepted into the community fully, or will her history as a soul interfere forever?
