Swimming Studies  is a brilliantly original, meditative memoir that explores the worlds of competitive and recreational swimming. From her training for the Olympic trials as a teenager to enjoying pools and beaches around the world as an adult, Leanne Shapton offers a fascinating glimpse into the private, often solitary, realm of swimming. Her spare and elegant writing reveals an intimate narrative of suburban adolescence, spent underwater in a discipline that continues to inspire Shapton's work as an artist and author. Her illustrations throughout the book offer an intuitive perspective on the landscapes and imagery of the sport. Shapton's emphasis is on the smaller moments of athletic pursuit rather than its triumphs. For the accomplished athlete, aspiring amateur, or habitual practicer, this remarkable work of written and visual sketches propels the reader through a beautifully personal and universally appealing exercise in reflection.

I could see how some people may think this book is a tad boring, but I actually quite enjoyed it. Not a fast read: something to savour. I could actually "feel" the surrounding environment and water on my skin. I knew a competitive swimmer as a teen, and recommended this book to her. She became nostalgic upon reading it. Great for swimmers or former swimmers.

I wanted to like this book and certainly enjoyed her sketches of the Hotel Therme in Vals which sent me to look at photos of that again. But, I couldn't get below the surface of her writing and feel any connection with her, family or friends. Like a rough draft which needs developing.

There are some interesting elements in this book but I quickly tired of Shapton's self-regarding writing. An example: the minutiae of her collection of swim suits and where she swam wearing them with Bob and Carol and Ted and Alice.

If you are a swimmer, even if you have never swam competitvely, you will enjoy this book.
