Joe wants a friend. However, he needs to learn how to be one, too. In spite of Joe’s attempts, he invariably repeats his father’s mistakes, thinking that money will fix all problems and failing to understand what’s truly important in life. Besides the object lesson, the book is a hilarious romp, showcasing and exaggerating the horrors of middle school (check out the chapter of unfortunate names for teachers and the one about inventive and truly horrible cafeteria food).

“Billionaire Boy” is fun to read and a pointed look at the inherent deficits of mass consumerism. It’s heart-warming without being treacly. Any kid whose ever wanted a friend and wonders just what it takes to make a real one will enjoy it.

It all started with a big fat boy, with a big fat dad, in a big house.

Joe is rich, incredibly rich. He is the son of a billionaire. But he’s NOT happy. Why is he not happy? I mean he’s got all the money in the world! It’s because his dad thinks all Joe needs is toys! Yes toys, toys, toys. But what Joe really wants is…friends. So he goes to a new school, to make a fresh start, to make some friends.

His plan works….for a while…but then it all starts to go wrong. Can Joe keep his new friends when they find out he has lied to them all along?

I loved this book!
