even after Guido starts his swimming lessons he is still floating, badly, through his life, while Giulia is a good swimmer but not so good at life choices. each live in their own sadness, sharing some intimate moments but lacking insight into their own and each others lives.

This is a 2009 Italian drama directed by Giuseppe Piccioni and starring Valerio Mastandrea as Guido and Valeria Golino as the title character, Giulia.
A successful and married writer grappling with feelings of futility about his profession, Guido doesn't get an inspiration from his wife any more.
This is probably why he gets attracted to Giulia who appears to be a somewhat mysterious woman with a dark secret in the shadow.
Giulia herself didn't get an inspiration and happiness for her life from her husband in the first place.
It is a gripping and thought-provoking drama.

The movie is intense and light at the same time, great performances of the actors.
Sad and melancholic, but with a strong vital stream of feelings and thoughts.

A cinematic experience! A riveting story which utilizes metaphors to drive its points: the ever-pervading presence of the pool and the excruciating swim laps by the writer masquerade as dilemmas and difficulties the lover-murderess is undergoing. The physical tension, however, is shown in the person of the writer and that's where the poetry takes its effect. The denouement continues to use that level of parallelism and that both ends losing in their quests. A marvel!
