Chip, an airline pilot, has had to ditch his jet in Lake Champlain after double engine failure, causing the deaths of thirty-nine passengers. In a dusty corner of a basement in his new Victorian house, he finds a door sealed shut with thirty-nine 6-inch carriage bolts. The coincidence is not lost on Chip.

An insidious ghost story set in New Hampshire (aren't all of Bohjalian's books set in New Hampshire?) that is reminiscent of Stephen King's The Shining. A haunted old house (complete with scary, boarded up room in the basement), an imbalanced dad, a set of twins, and neighbours who are witches...creepy! I couldn't stop listening to it!
