I was so surprised and excited to read about Edmonton in a novel, with all our foibles as a city, that when I first started this novel, I loved every word. Half way in, the honeymoon was definitely over. Boredom came on with the recorded dribs and drabs of our lives in black and white print reinforced my own bland existence. Coffee house visits, dull jobs with escapist fantasies, relationships that seem to drift on are all too true in life. What I craved was excitement! What I was dying to read about was not here. But I found, to my amazement, that this is what is true and the truth at the same time. Life is just so much driftwood, and we should be looking to distant shores and not at the debris that remains after the river moves on.
