Add a CommentCute story, one I don't remember reading when I was younger.
A gorgeous book about individuality and belonging. The art is comedic and beautiful. The story sweet and touching. It's a book we return to again and again.
When our family was younger, this was one of our favourite story time books. Sensitive and sweet.
After an encounter with an owl, Stellaluna is flung loose from her mother into the world. By chance she lands in the nest of some birds, who immediately adopt her. There is one problem though, Stellaluna is a bat, but her new mother expects her to act like a bird. By struggling to do it the bird way, to some comedic results, she finds out that their perspective is not best for a bat. In the end, Stellaluna is reunited with her original family, then taught their ways.
In a nice sentiment, her differences do not prevent her from remaining friends with the bird family. Every individual is different, whether these are physical or personal traits should not mean that we should judge others as "wrong". It is more important to remember the similarities we all share.
Bats and birds are excellent substitutes for this lesson. The art is realistic, however there are some instances of levity where it departs from this to portray the animals doing uncharacteristic actions. To make this truly great teaching material, the author gives this moral lesson in a way that incorporates information about the animals within the story. Additional information on bats is included in the back.
I know I've read this one before, but it had been a long while, so I was happy to give it another look. The artwork is beautiful and there's lots of sneaky learning about bats and birds, disguised behind a cute story. I am still very afraid of bats, but I can deal with Stellaluna.
great book.
to be honest - with all the hype I expected better... not at all what I thought it would be... neither my 5.5yo nor I were 'awed'...
My favourite book as a child. I've read it over and over :)
