I have to say, even though I am not a 'pet' person, I found this book a delightful read. The insertion of dialogue between the pets at first was distracting, perhaps because the writing style was so different for me, but I later found they had much to 'say'. The characters were lovely, and the plot interesting. The town of Crozet must truly have been small and remote, because the work atmosphere at the post office is truly one of wishful thinking. The postmistress and employees chatted away with customers, took long lunches, left doors unlocked, and had pets inside, etc. A far, far cry from my real-life work experience. But then again, the story is fiction.

The local post office in Crozet, Virginia is the local hub for tidbits of gossip and postmistress Mary "Harry" Haristeen hears it all, day after day. When box patrons pick up their daily mail, she gets first-hand knowledge of the trouble brewing between those who work at the local hospital. When the plant manager is found murdered in the basement of the hospital. Harry can't curtail her curiosity, snoops about the hospital, and is attacked and injured herself. Then a well-loved elderly doctor is murdered in cold blood. Harry insists on sniffing out the killer, but in reality, it's her two cats and corgi who sniff out the secrets that lie hidden in the bowels of the hospital.
