The book is as equally absorbing as the TV series even though they are very different stories that only share characters and tone. This is about friendship, love, and feelings. Any similarity to a standard Western is only in setting. It's a moving Western for readers who have grown up.

If you enjoyed the cable TV show you will like the book, although the TV show centers on some of the very minor characters in the book, and even takes an opposite view of some of the others (Calamity Jane is one. The whoreman, owner of the Gem, is another). The author does a remarkable job of creating interest in this lawless, old west town on the verge of joining civilization. Every sentence is a paragraph and every paragraph a story. Once you get started you won't be able to put it down.

I thought I was going to like Deadwood because it’s about the last days of gun fighter Wild Bill Hickock. It is, but the whole Deadwood setting is what made the book so thoroughly enjoyable.
This is a gritty & gruesome 1870s town. It’s home to gold rushers, whores and whoremongers, lawmen and entrepreneurs. Spilling over with liquor, sex, and violence, it’s a funny book and a moving book. Peter Dexter portrays the characters differently than HBO in its DVD series (which is wonderful), but ultimately decided to like both separately.

"Boone coughed; the only other noise was Swearingen breathing through his teeth as he rocked, up and down from the waist. It didn't feel like there was an idea in the room." page 282.

"The boy opened the book, before he had time to consider the consequences, and stared at the first page." page 256.

"There was a crowd of miners and gamblers and reprobates around them, a lot of drinking and backslapping. Somebody discharged his pistol into the floor, and the smell of the powder stunk worse than the miners."
