Julian Osborne (Fred Astaire): "The war started when people accepted the idiotic principle that peace could be maintained by arranging to defend themselves with weapons they couldn't possibly use without committing suicide."
This film, and the book it's based on, are a product of the Zeitgest of the Eisenhower years. Between 1955, when the idea for this story was just a gleam in Nevil Shute's eye, to 1960 when Stanley Kramer's movie had been distributed to…

I can see why it would be such a groundbreaker in 1959: so many taboos are discussed in it! The after-effects of Armageddon, the pointlessness of nuclear weapons, radiation poisoning…
Do not watch if you don’t like “Waltzing Matilda.”

I tho this was a great movie. Certainly a bit dated but the portrayal of a post nuclear world was eerily presented. One of those movies anyone over the age of ten can watch.

This didn't really seem to have a very strong plot, just a bunch of events thrown together. In the end, the meaning became clear, an anti war/anti nuke, pro euthanasia movie.
I don't want to suffer from radiation sickness, so I will kill…
What a disappointment! It was considered to be among the best movies ever when released, but its message is heavy handed, the music is ...um... really cheesy (thankfully there is not a lot of it).

5-star movie and worth watching for everyone in particular these days someone advocates that one country should attack another country with tactic nuke and someone else repeated that he could and would, if feels like to, weep this and that…

This is an excellent Stanley Kramer 'message' flick, with great understated acting, especially on the part of Fred Astaire. The score, based on "Waltzing Matilda," is touching. Quibblers will point out that the bodies of the deceased…

A very good movie about the last survivors of WW 3 planet wide nuclear holocaust surviving in Australia; the nuclear radiation cloud that is slowly creeping towards Australia to extinguish all humans. A great cast and plot of struggling…

till packs a punch, close to 60 years after its original release, in 1959. And that's saying something.
What OTHER movies did I--and millions of others--line up at the box office to see that year? John Wayne in Rio Bravo, Hitchcock's…

As a much younger person I vividly recall the people in Minnesota were actually building bomb shelters in their backyards, complete with stocks of canned food and battery operated lights and bedding and water. 'On The Beach' represented…

Released in 1959 - "On The Beach" is actually a fairly thoughtful version of Nevil Shute's novel about Australians awaiting the effects of nuclear fallout from an explosion that has depopulated the rest of the world.
This film features…

This is a 1959 American post-apocalyptic SF produced and directed by Stanley Kramer, based on Nevil Shute's 1957 novel of the same name depicting a nuclear war and its aftermath.
During 1964, in the months following World War III, the…
"On the Beach" fascinates me. Now that we are in the grip of abrupt climate change, we may see a similar scenario unfold. We may see an increase in risky behavior such as insane car races. We are certainly seeing denial. My hope is…

The end of the word may be many things, but I never thought it'd be so dull. Based on the equally dull novel by Nevil Shute, "On the Beach," which probably seemed very of the moment in the 50s, is set in a post-nuclear war world where…

On the Beach is based upon a novel by Nevil Shute that deals with the aftereffects of nuclear war. We don’t see any of the war, but we do see the aftereffects as the radioactive fallout drifts across the globe. The book is on many college…
